What should I do if I need urgent dental care?
If you need urgent or emergency dental care, call the Appointment Center at 1-800-813-2000. For TTY, call 711. Emergency dental care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency outside of Kaiser Permanente’s dental service area?
If you have a dental emergency outside of our dental service area, go to the nearest dental care facility. You have limited coverage for qualifying emergency care if your condition meets the emergency dental conditions below.
What are examples of emergency dental conditions?
Emergency dental care involves treatment of sudden and unexpected conditions in or around the teeth and gums needing immediate attention. Emergency dental conditions include:
- Bleeding that does not stop
- Severe swelling or infection that makes it hard to breathe or swallow
- Severe traumatic injury
What are examples of urgent dental conditions?
Urgent dental conditions include:
- Chipped teeth
- Broken fillings that cause irritation
- Swelling around a tooth
Are there additional costs associated with urgent and emergency dental care?
If you need emergency or urgent care, you may have to pay $25 in addition to your normal office visit charge. See your summary of benefits for a description of your urgent and emergency care benefits.
NOTE: For our Traditional dental members, care at facilities not owned by Kaiser Permanente is covered only if you experience a dental emergency as described above and you are outside our dental service area. Follow-up care and care for urgent conditions are covered only when provided in a Kaiser Permanente dental office. For our Dental Choice (PPO) members, you can choose from a network of providers and facilities including Kaiser Permanente dental offices. You may be balance billed if seeking treatment with nonparticipating dentists in the Kaiser Permanente Dental Choice (PPO) network.
